Sorry, no runner for Laxman: Ponting

Bengaluru: Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has already announced that V.V.S. Laxman will not get a runner, if he asks for one, for the Bengaluru Test.

"Laxman cannot come into a match with pre-existing injuries and then ask for a runner," he said when asked whether he would allow one if he happens to play the match.

"He did not look uncomfortable at all while batting in Mohali. However, we are not really bothered about his presence in the team," he added.

Laxman an unsung star, says Gilchrist

V. V. S. Laxman is the unsung hero of Indian cricket because by his nature itself he doesn’t express himself to the outside world and he is not a billboard cricketer making headlines with all those endorsements, says Adam Gilchrist, former Australia captain while referring to the Hyderabadi’s match-winning effort against Australia in the first Test in Mohali recently.

“But, when it comes to skills, it is very obvious that VVS enjoys the challenge of facing a crisis. It is a pity that he remains the unsung star of Indian batting line-up which includes Sachin, Rahul, Virender (Sehwag) and earlier Saurav,” Gilchrist pointed out during his private visit to Hyderabad as brand ambassador of University of Wollongong (Sydney) here on Friday.

Misbah to lead Pakistan in Test series

KARACHI, Oct. 8 (APP): Struggling batsman Misbah-ul-Haq has returned to lead Pakistan in the upcoming 2-Test match series against South Afriqa is being played in November in United Arab Emirates (UAE). Stunning decision of Misbah’s appointment was made by Pakistan Cricket Board and after approval by Chairman Ijaz Butt. Shahid Afridi has been retained as captain for ODI and T20 series starting in Abu Dhabi with opening T20 on October 26.
Former Pakistan Vice Captain Kamran Akmal was axed from the team in favor of Zulqarnain Haider, who made a superb debut in the Oval, London in August.
Left handed opener Taufeeq Umer after being in doldrums for over two years has been recalled in the team alongwith leg-spinner Danish Kaneria , fast bowler Muhammad Sami and left arm spinner Abdur Rehman for the Test series.
All-rounder Sohail Tanvir has also been included in the 16-member squad subject to fitness.

Laxman inspires remarkable India victory over Australia

MOHALI, India — Venkatsai Laxman defied a back injury to make an unbeaten 73 as India snatched a remarkable one-wicket victory from the jaws of defeat in the opening Test against Australia on Tuesday.
Needing 216 to win, India were facing defeat at 124-8 before Laxman came to his team's rescue with a brave knock under pressure on the fifth and final day, guiding his side to a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Batting with a runner because of a stiff back, Laxman was well supported by tail-ender Ishant Sharma, who made a defiant 31 in an 81-run stand for the ninth wicket before being trapped leg-before by Ben Hilfenhaus (4-57).

Laxman came to his team's rescue with a brave knock under pressure on the fifth and final day

Australia's last chance of winning the match came when left-arm paceman Mitchell Johnson began his 17th over to last-man Pragyan Ojha, with India requiring six runs to win.
